A Georgian Language course (late begginers)

Of course, traveling in Georgia is never completely devoid of risk and our program included a minor incident involving a tire (on a picturesque spot). So we had to stop for one hour and change a wheel and then proceed to some vulcanization shop and then — it was late in the afternoon and it was raining and I caught the worst cold I ever had. Nevertheless, this incident offered us the possibility of meeting a whole herd of young cows and bulls and of having a lively insight of these interesting animals, in whose life people free from prejudice may notice a dash of glamour.

Anyway, I had nothing more entertaining to do than to observe, to listen and to improve my Georgian. Some of the cows were really talkative (and one or two of them seemed even somewhat literate).

Note that in Georgian cows are puri, ფური. Don’t mistake it with p’uri, პური, which means bread (especially when you ask for more bread for your beef shashlik).

Unit 1.

Early in the morning, I climb up the mountain.

Most Georgians can speak Russian, at least the oldest ones (and that cow doesn’t seem so young). It can be very pratical if you too happen to speak some Russian. 

But I see a young bull coming, all clad in black like most Georgian youth.

She’s far already.

I know I’m cheating, this cow is absolutely not the same one, I agree, she isn’t even Georgian but a pure Montenegrine breed who crossed our road near the Albanian-Montenegro border.

I like the elegant horizontality of her movements. Did I say glamorous ?

I used the Assimil guide to Georgian language in its French edition (Dominique Gauthier-Eligoulachvili, 2003). I followed the transcription used in this book but in others the transcript  for all the t’ and t, p’ and p, k’ and k, ts’ and ts, can be reversed (with or without the ’ : here, the ’ means the letter is marked by a glottal stop, and without it that the letter is pronounced with an aspiration — all of this doesn’t sound very clear of course until you’ve heard Georgians talking with several different throat sounds).

At least I hope I didn’t mix all the crazy Georgian letters.
